Attendance/Tardiness

Attendance – Attendance is a key factor in student’s success.  The support of parents/guardians is extremely important in making sure students are in class every day.  Students who miss 30 or more days of school will be recommended to the retention committee for possible retention in the same grade.

Parent Responsibility:

  1. Parents should send a written request for make-up work one week prior to a planned absence.  This work should be completed when the child returns.  Teachers may provide work upon this request or upon the student’s return from the absence.
  2. Parents/guardians are asked to call to notify the office of a student’s absence/tardiness by 9:30 a.m. on the date of the occurrence.  Written confirmation is not necessary.
  3. Homework Requests - If a student is absent three (3) or more days, parents can request that the office collect make-up work.  Teachers need 24 hours notice to assemble the work.  Work should then be completed upon the student’s return to school.

Student Responsibility:

  1. Students arriving late to school or leaving early must check in or out through the main office.  Late arrivals will be issued a pass which should be presented to the appropriate teacher.
  2. If student’s absences or late arrivals are excused, he/she may make up the work for credit.  Students are given one day for each day absent to make up work.  Students with an unexcused absence will not be allowed to make up homework for credit.  However, students are encouraged to make up work so as not to fall behind in their class.

Arriving late – Students arriving late to school will be issued a pass indicating unexcused or excused.  On the third unexcused tardy to school, parent contact will be made.  On the fourth unexcused tardy to school, a discipline referral may be issued.  Each subsequent tardy to school will result in a discipline referral for the remainder of the semester.

Leaving Early – Students may be released to leave school early.  Only individuals with proper identification and who are listed on the student’s emergency card on file in the office may check students out of school.

Tardy to Class – All students are expected to be in class on time.  Upon a third tardy to that period, parents will be notified.  At each grade reporting period, a list of students with four or more tardies will be run, and students on that list will be subject to disciplinary action ranging from assigned seating during lunch to in-school suspension for the day.

After School Activities – Students must be in attendance for a half day (12:00 noon) in order to participate in after school activities.

Medications – Students are not to be in possession of any medication on campus.  This includes both over-the-counter medications as well as prescription drugs.  Parents must bring any medication, prescription or non-prescription, in its original container, to the office and complete all necessary paperwork prior to any medication being taken in this building.  The office secretary will make the arrangements for the medication to be taken at the prescribed time.

Telephone – North Middle School limits the use of the school telephone to matters of an emergency nature.  Students are not allowed to call home about books, lunches, unsigned forms, or homework, etc.  Students must learn to take responsibility for these matters and plan ahead.  Students may not call home to make arrangements for after-school activities as these arrangements should be made before leaving home.  North Middle School will be glad to deliver a message to your child in case of an emergency.  We will not interrupt class to have the student take a phone call, as time spent in class is invaluable.  Students may not be in possession of cell phones during the school day. (Please see NMS Handbook regarding Cell Phones/Cameras/ Electronic Devices/Miscellaneous)

Buss Passes – Bus passes will be issued for emergencies only.  Parents should contact the transportation office (734-699-5100) to request a buss pass. Transportation will review the request and contact the school should the request be honored.
