Request the Notification of Pesticide Application As part of the District’s pest and vegetation management program, pesticides are occasionally applied. Parents and/or guardians have the right to be informed prior to any pesticide application made to the school grounds and buildings. Prior notification requires completion of the form located to the right. The District has used pesticides for many years with no problems to date, and it anticipates few, if any, changes from prior use. In certain emergencies, pesticides may be applied without prior notice; however, at your request, parents/guardians will be informed following application. Annual Asbestos Notification The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) of 1986 requires that an annual notification be sent to parents addressing the status of asbestos in schools. AHERA requires that all schools be inspected to determine if there are any building materials that contain asbestos. When such products are found, the school must develop a management plan that describes how the school will control the potential for exposure to asbestos fibers, which can be dangerous to health if the asbestos is disturbed. AHERA’s purpose is to ensure that any potential problems be addressed. Asbestos was used extensively in building materials because of its insulation and fire-retarding properties before it was known to be a potential health hazard. The vast majority of buildings contain some asbestos, usually found in steam tunnels and boiler rooms. Other asbestos materials, such as floor tiles, do not necessarily pose a health concern unless they are damaged or deteriorated. Every three years, AHERA requires that buildings be re-inspected by an Environmental Protection Agency-certified asbestos building inspector to update the management plan with the current condition of the asbestos-containing materials. Additionally, AHERA requires school personnel trained in the handling of asbestos-containing materials to conduct surveillance of any changes every six months. The District hired the Environmental Testing and Consulting Company in Romulus to perform the current three-year re-inspection. Should you have any questions concerning asbestos in a school building, a copy of the report is available for review at each school building and at the Administration Building. Please contact the Buildings and Grounds Department at 734-697-9123 extension 228 for an appointment.
